My Stipendium Hungaricum Excellence Award Journey
When I boarded my flight to Hungary last September, I had no idea that I was stepping into one of the most transformative years of my life. Coming from an underdeveloped hometown, I never imagined pursuing a master’s degree in Europe. The Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship changed that completely. It did far more than fund my studies—it opened doors to opportunities, experiences, and a community that I never thought I would be part of.
I am currently pursuing my master’s in Regional and Environmental Economics at John von Neumann University. My courses have challenged me to think in new ways and approach problems with broader, more critical perspectives. Living in a university dorm with students from Hungary and across the world has expanded my understanding of different cultures and helped me develop a true sense of belonging. These friendships have shaped me deeply, and I will carry them with me throughout my life.
One of the most unexpected and rewarding parts of my experience has been learning Hungarian. What initially seemed intimidating quickly became a source of confidence. Being able to communicate with locals, navigate daily life, and feel more integrated has made my time in Hungary even more meaningful.
Living in Budapest has allowed me to experience a vibrant cultural scene—from art exhibitions and opera performances to discovering local cuisine. These experiences taught me to appreciate creativity, effort, and tradition in everyday life, inspiring me to approach challenges with curiosity and openness.
I am incredibly grateful to my professors, university staff and dormitory team. Their support has helped me adapt to a new country, climate, and culture. One of my most memorable experiences was being invited to a professor’s home, where our group prepared and enjoyed traditional Hungarian goulash together. Moments like these taught me the value of community, hospitality, and learning from one another beyond the classroom.
With the support I received, I felt inspired to give back. I began mentoring new students, helping them navigate dormitory life and official procedures. Guiding them strengthened my own organizational skills and gave me a sense of responsibility and pride. It has been truly fulfilling to help others settle into their new environment.
Receiving the Stipendium Hungaricum Excellence Award is an honour that reinforces how meaningful this journey has been. This scholarship has supported not only my academic growth but also my personal development. It has made me more confident, resilient, and prepared to face new challenges. I am deeply grateful for the guidance, friendships, and opportunities I have received, and I am committed to giving back in ways that honour the trust placed in me.
